When to go
- Year round.
- Hottest months are April to August.
- Elephant Gathering at Minneriya or Kaudulla is July to September.

- Quick visit: 2 to 3 nights for Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and one safari.
- Deep dive: 4 to 5 nights with Anuradhapura, Ritigala and extra village time.

- Sigiriya or Habarana for central access.
- Dambulla for caves and ballooning.
- Polonnaruwa town for lakeside sunsets and cycling.
Getting around
- Private car or van with driver guide is simplest.
- Trains do not connect the core sites well.

Sample routes
3 days 2 nights
- Day 1 Colombo or airport to Dambulla caves. Check in near Sigiriya. Pidurangala sunset.
- Day 2 Polonnaruwa cycling for 3 hours with short ruin visits. Evening Minneriya or Kaudulla safari in season.
- Day 3 Sigiriya sunrise climb. Continue to Kandy for the train to Ella or return to Colombo.
4 days 3 nights
Add Anuradhapura and Mihintale or add Ritigala and a lake evening near Habarana.
5 days 4 nights
Include Aukana standing Buddha, a craft village visit and a balloon flight when in season.
Timing tips
- Safaris work best 6 to 9 am and 3 to 6 pm.
- Start Sigiriya at gate opening to avoid heat.
- Dambulla caves are cooler early morning or late afternoon.
- Keep a rest block around midday.

- Car seats on request.
- Use a soft carrier for Sigiriya stairs.
- Choose a hotel with a pool and shaded gardens.
- Polonnaruwa cycling is flat and family friendly. Kid seats can be arranged.

- July. Peak dry season. Elephant Gathering begins.
- August. Similar to July with excellent wildlife.
- September. Still dry with the Gathering often continuing.
- October. Inter monsoon with more afternoon storms.
- November. Showery spells, ballooning starts, fewer crowds at ruins.
- December. Lush and showery. Holiday demand rises.
