Visa & eTA Basics for Sri Lanka (With Official Links)

Most short-stay visitors apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). Below is a simple, up-to-date overview with official links for applying, checking status and extensions.

What you can apply for

  • Tourist ETA – short visit, typically issued for up to 30 days on arrival, with double entry permitted within that period. Can be extended after arrival (see “Extensions”).
  • Business ETA – short business visits (meetings, conferences, etc.).
  • Transit ETA – up to 2 days for flight/sea transfers. Free of charge basis with required proof of onward travel.

Basic requirements at entry

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival.
  • Confirmed return/onward ticket (for air arrivals).
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay.
  • No work permitted on an ETA (paid or unpaid) beyond the purpose stated.

How to apply online (step-by-step)

  1. Go to the official ETA site: eta.gov.lk.
  2. Open Apply Online and submit your details (each traveller needs their own application).
  3. Pay on the official site only (avoid third-party agents).
  4. Watch for the email decision. You can also check status online.
  5. Carry a copy (digital or printed) of your ETA approval when you travel.

Extensions (after you arrive)

  • Tourist ETAs can be extended beyond the initial 30 days (up to a maximum stay of six months, subject to approval).
  • Apply online at the official Visa Extension portal or visit the Department of Immigration & Emigration (Battaramulla) in person.

Transit in Sri Lanka

  • For layovers under 48 hours, apply for a Transit ETA. It’s free with documentary proof of onward travel.
  • Transit stays cannot be extended; for longer stays, apply for a Tourist ETA instead.

On-arrival vs apply-in-advance

  • While on-arrival processing has existed, the Department has announced that ETA obtained in advance is required for short-stay visitors. Always apply online before you fly.
  • Fees/waivers and eligible nationalities change periodically. Use the official Fees page for the latest.

Avoid common mistakes

  • Only use the official websites (eta.gov.lk and immigration.gov.lk). Third-party sites may charge extra.
  • Name and passport must exactly match your passport bio page.
  • Keep a copy of your ETA approval for border control.
  • Check airline rules for boarding without printed proof.
