  • Bentota and Hikkaduwa for river cruises and quick beach time close to Colombo.

Getting around

  • Private car or van is simplest for airport transfers and intercity moves.
  • Inside cities use metered taxis and ride-hailing apps.
  • Colombo has walkable pockets; plan for heat breaks from 11:00 to 15:00.

  • Airport to Negombo: 20 to 30 minutes
  • Airport to Colombo: 45 to 60 minutes
  • Colombo to Galle Fort (expressway): 2 to 2.5 hours
  • Galle Fort to Bentota: 1 to 1.5 hours
  • Colombo to Kandy: 3 to 4 hours
  • Kandy to Ella by train: 6 to 7.5 hours through the hills

Best daily timing

  • City walks 7:30 to 10:30 and 16:00 to sunset
  • Markets open early. Many museums close on Mondays or Poya days
  • Galle ramparts are perfect for golden hour and post-sunset strolls

  • Colombo Old Town Hall, Red Mosque area, colonial quarters, Lotus Tower views, Geoffrey Bawa No. 11, contemporary galleries and chic cafés.
  • Negombo Fish market at dawn, Dutch canal boat rides, lagoon seafood.
  • Galle Fort Rampart walk, lighthouse and bastions, museums, boutiques and tea houses.
  • Kandy Temple of the Tooth evening puja, lake walk, small craft shops and cafés.
  • Bentota Madu River cruise, water sports, brief beach time before flights.

Sample routes

Colombo Stopover 1 night

  1. Airport transfer to Colombo. Sunset walk in the old quarter and dinner.
  2. Morning design and gallery loop. Depart to the next region after lunch.

Negombo Easy Arrival 1 night

  1. Check in near the beach. Evening lagoon seafood.
  2. Early fish market and canal boat. Continue toward Sigiriya or Kandy.

Colombo + Galle Fort 3 days 2 nights

  1. Day 1 Colombo city walk and dinner.
  2. Day 2 Expressway to Galle. Rampart sunset and boutique browsing.
  3. Day 3 Breakfast in the fort. Drive to south coast beaches or back to the airport.

Kandy Pause 2 days 1 night

Lake walk and evening Temple of the Tooth. Morning Botanic Gardens, then rail or road to the hill country.

Timing tips

  • Start early to beat heat and traffic.
  • Book restaurants for Friday and Saturday nights.
  • On Poya days alcohol is not served in most venues and some museums close early.

  • Choose centrally located hotels to reduce car time.
  • Many museums are compact and stroller friendly; some fort streets are cobbled.
  • Schedule pool time in the afternoon for kids.

What to pack

  • Light clothing, a modest cover-up for temples, comfortable walking shoes.
  • Refillable bottle, sun protection and a small umbrella for showers.
  • Contactless card and some cash for tuk-tuks and markets.

Responsible travel

  • Dress respectfully at temples and remove shoes.
  • Use licensed taxis and agree meter or fare before starting.
  • Keep public spaces clean. Refill bottles where possible.

  • March. Warm, beach friendly. Afternoon heat in cities.
  • April. Sinhala and Tamil New Year mid-month. Shops may close for a day or two.
  • May. Vesak lanterns light up Colombo. Showers increase but city walks still work between bursts.
  • June. More showers on the south-west but cities run as normal.
  • July. Galle Fort lively with holidaymakers. Reserve stays early.
  • August. Kandy Perahera season brings large temple processions and road closures on select nights.
  • September. Shoulder month with thinner crowds.
  • October. Inter-monsoon storms; keep indoor galleries and cafés in the plan.
  • November. Rains ease; Colombo cools slightly. Good dining season starts.
  • December. Peak holiday energy. Book restaurants and hotels ahead.
