Trincomalee Chill 4 days 3 nights

  1. Day 1 Arrive Nilaveli or Uppuveli. Evening beach walk.
  2. Day 2 Early dolphin watch or whales in season. Afternoon Marble Beach and Koneswaram Temple.
  3. Day 3 Boat to Pigeon Island for snorkelling. Sunset at Dutch Bay.
  4. Day 4 Lazy morning. Continue to the Cultural Triangle or Wilpattu.

Pasikuda Family 4 days 3 nights

  1. Day 1 Settle in by the lagoon bay and pool.
  2. Day 2 Glass-bottom or snorkel hour in the morning. Kayak in the late afternoon.
  3. Day 3 Day trip to Batticaloa lighthouse and lagoon boat ride.
  4. Day 4 Beach time and depart toward Kandy or Sigiriya.

Arugam Bay Surf 4 days 3 nights

Morning lessons at Baby Point for beginners or guided sessions at Main Point. Sunset climbs at Elephant Rock. Optional Kumana safari on a rest day.

Jaffna Heritage 3 days 2 nights

Nallur Kovil puja, the fort, market tastings and island loop to Delft for wild horses and coral walls. Add Casuarina Beach for a swim.

North Birding Mannar 2 days 1 night

Lagoon circuits for flamingos and migrant waders November to March. Combine with Wilpattu or Jaffna.

Timing tips

  • Snorkel and boat trips are best before midday when winds increase.
  • Carry cash for temple offerings and island ferry tickets around Jaffna.
  • Nallur puja times are busy. Dress modestly and remove shoes.
  • Surf schools get crowded at mid morning. Dawn lessons are calmer.

Family notes

  • Shallow bays at Pasikuda and Kalkudah suit young swimmers.
  • Life jackets for snorkelling can be arranged. Choose reef friendly sunscreen.
  • Plan shade breaks from 11.00 to 15.00 when UV is strongest.

What to pack

  • Rash guard, reef safe sunscreen, hat and sunglasses.
  • Dry bag, light towel and water shoes for boats and reefs.
  • Modest clothing for temples, especially in Jaffna.
  • Motion sickness tablets for whale trips if needed.

Responsible travel

  • Do not stand on coral or touch turtles. Keep fins off the reef.
  • Choose licensed boat operators and avoid crowding wildlife.
  • Dress respectfully at kovils and remove footwear.
  • Carry back all litter. Refill bottles where possible.

Month by month

  • January. Good for Jaffna and Mannar. East coast is windier and has more swell.
  • February. Similar to January. Pleasant north, variable east.
  • March. Transition month. Seas begin calming on the east.
  • April. Start of the best period for Trincomalee and Pasikuda. Warm, gentle mornings.
  • May. Trincomalee whales begin. Arugam Bay surf turns on.
  • June. Clear seas most mornings in the east. Afternoon winds common.
  • July. Peak east coast weather. Busy beaches. Reserve boats in advance.
  • August. Another peak month. Great for families and surf.
  • September. Still very good with fewer crowds toward the end of the month.
  • October. North East monsoon starts. More rain and wind. Trips become weather dependent.
  • November. Wet spells across the region. Better for birds in Mannar than beach days.
  • December. Continued monsoon. Consider the south and west for beaches, keep Jaffna for culture with showers.
