- Scenic loop: 3 to 4 nights for Nuwara Eliya and Ella or Haputale.
- Deep dive: 5 nights for Horton Plains, Lipton’s Seat and extra walks.

- Best is a mix of private car or van and reserved train seats.

Sample routes
3 days 2 nights
- Day 1 Arrive Kandy. Temple of the Tooth and lake walk. Optional dance show.
- Day 2 Peradeniya Gardens. Midday train Kandy or Peradeniya to Nanu Oya. Tea estate check in near Nuwara Eliya.
- Day 3 Tea factory tour and short walk. Continue by car to Ella or return to Colombo.
4 days 3 nights
- Day 1 Kandy sights and gardens.
- Day 2 Train to Nanu Oya. Nuwara Eliya town and Gregory Lake.
- Day 3 Early Horton Plains to World’s End. Transfer to Ella. Sunset at Little Adam’s Peak.
- Day 4 Nine Arches Bridge and zipline or cafe time. Continue to Yala or south coast.
5 days 4 nights
Add Haputale with sunrise at Lipton’s Seat and a tea worker village visit. Option to see Diyaluma Falls if water levels allow.
Timing tips
- Board earlier trains for better light and fewer crowds.
- Horton Plains is best 6 to 9 am before cloud builds.
- Nine Arches has frequent morning trains. Check times the day before.
- Afternoons often turn misty. Plan walks for early morning.
Family notes
- Ask for forward-facing seats and motion-sickness care on winding roads.
- Choose hotels with heating or fireplaces in Nuwara Eliya.
- Little Adam’s Peak is a friendly short hike for kids.
- Rail segments of 2 to 3 hours are easier with children.
What to pack
- Warm layer or light fleece for evenings. Rain jacket and small umbrella.
- Comfortable walking shoes. Leech socks for forest hikes after rain.
- Refillable bottle, sun protection and a dry bag for cameras.
Responsible travel
- Stay on marked trails. Do not climb unsafe viewpoints.
- Ask permission before photographing tea pluckers. Support fair trade shops.
- Keep a safe distance from tracks and follow station staff instructions.
- Carry back all waste. Use refill points where available.

- October. Inter-monsoon. Thunder showers and misty afternoons.
