The two monsoons in simple terms

  • Southwest monsoon May to September. Brings wind and rain to the southwest and west coasts including Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle and Mirissa. Hill country gets afternoon showers. Seas on the southwest are often rough.
  • Northeast monsoon October to December and sometimes into January. Affects the east and north including Trincomalee, Pasikuda, Arugam Bay and Jaffna. Seas there can be choppy with more rain and wind.
  • Inter-monsoon periods mid March to April and October to November. Short, sharp thundershowers can pop up almost anywhere, usually in the afternoon.
  • Dry zone pocket The Cultural Triangle around Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa stays relatively dry from May to September with hot sunny days and occasional storms.
